Fortinet Discovers Intel Media Server Studio DLL Pre-Loading Vulnerability
Summary
Fortinet's FortiGuard Labs has discovered a DLL preloading vulnerability in Intel's Media Server Studio.
Intel Media Server Studio is a software development tool suite for transcoding live, over-the-top broadcasting, and streaming video, as well as for cloud gaming, virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI), and video conferencing. It provides state-of-the-art components and features for tailoring visual quality versus performance. These components include Intel Media SDK, Intel SDK for OpenCL applications, as well as runtimes, graphics drivers, and advanced analysis tools.
Intel's Media Server Studio for Windows is susceptible to a DLL preloading vulnerability. The issue occurs when the application looks to load a DLL for execution and an attacker provides a malicious DLL to use instead. The application generally follows a specific search path to locate the DLL. The vulnerability can be exploited by a simple file write (or potentially an over-write) which results in a foreign DLL running under the context of the application.
