MS.SMB.DCERPC.SRVSVC.PathCanonicalize.Overflow

description-logoDescription

This indicates an attack attempt against a buffer-overflow vulnerability in Microsoft Windows.
The vulnerability is caused by an error when the Server service handles some malicious RPC requests. By sending a specially crafted RPC request to the Server RPC interface, a remote attacker could overflow a buffer and execute arbitrary code on a vulnerable system.

recomended-action-logoRecommended Actions

Microsoft has released a critical update in the Microsoft Security Bulletin MS06-040 that fixes this vulnerability. Please apply the patch to all affected machines.
Protect your network by using multiple layers of security.
Use administrative accounts only for administrative purposes. Normal every day tasks should be performed using an unprivileged account.
Do not follow links provided by unknown or untrusted sources.
Users should never visit sites of questionable integrity or follow links provided by unfamiliar or untrusted sources.
Block TCP ports 139 and 445 at the network boundary. This may cause some applications and services not to function. Please visit the Microsoft Security Bulletin MS06-040 for more information.
Enforce that only trusted hosts and networks can send traffic to vulnerable computers.
